Foundation Course in Psychotherapy & Counselling / Certificate in Psychotherapy & Counselling*

Introduction

This postgraduate foundation course provides basic training and a solid grounding in psychotherapy and counselling theory and practice.

It combines academic, practical and experiential components within a supportive yet challenging environment.

Our foundation courses come from an "integrative standpoint"; as well as exploring the main therapeutic theories, they also examine philosophical and spiritual perspectives, cross-cultural approaches. Students are also introduced to the practical and ethical issues of working with clients in a variety of situations.

Two training options are available: the One-Year Foundation Course and the Intensive Foundation Course.

Course Objectives

The key objectives of the courses are to make it possible for participants:

  • To acquire some knowledge and understanding of a range of psychotherapy and counselling theories, with a focus on existential, psychodynamic and humanistic/integrative perspectives
  • To develop competence in the use of essential communication and counselling skills
  • To develop an aptitude for self-evaluation in the use of such skills
  • To examine their beliefs, assumptions and prejudices in order to help others do the same
  • To develop their capacity to reflect on their own interpersonal and emotional processes, patterns and experiences
  • To think critically about psychotherapy and counselling theory and practice
