Existential Psychotherapy Course

Course Structure

The course is designed to be completed in two years.

Each daily session comprises:

  • Academic and practical seminar
  • Training supervision
  • Personal and professional development group

Syllabus

Academic seminars

The course is modular and sequenced as follows:

Year 1

  • 1.1 Heidegger and Existential Psychotherapy
  • 1.2 Existence and Therapy
  • 1.3 The Body and Sexuality in Existential Psychotherapy

Year 2

  • 2.1 (Under review)
  • 2.2 Communication: Part 1: Language; Part 2: Spirituality
  • 2.3 Student-led Seminars

The course follows a linear sequence, each successive module building the previous ones. As such, the minimum period for a break in studies is one academic year to accommodate re-entry at the appropriate module in the sequence.

Although grounded in philosophy, the ADEP is principally a training programme and, as such, the primary focus will be on trainees' development as qualified practitioners with an expertise in the underlying assumptions, approaches, and attitudes that broadly characterise existential psychotherapy.

Assessment

At the end of Year 1, trainees are required to present three written submissions:

  • Theoretical essay (5000 words), title to be agreed by the trainee and tutor
  • Client study (5000 words)
  • Personal and professional development essay (4000 words)

During Term 2.3, trainees are required to present their draft papers to the group. The final draft is then written, taking into account the feedback received from peers and tutor:

  • Theoretical essay (5,000 words), title to be decided by the trainee and tutor
  • Client study (5,000 words)
  • Personal and professional development essay (4000 words)
