Professional Doctorate in Existential Phenomenological Counselling Psychology (DPsych)

Entry Requirements

In accordance with the BPS and HPC standards and criteria for entry, applicants to the DPsych are required to meet the following entry requirements, which are assessed during the interview process:

  1. A minimum of 2:1 Psychology degree or above (in exceptional circumstances, such as individuals with extensive clinical experience, we will consider a 2:2 award)
  2. Successful completion of a Foundation Course in Psychotherapy & Counselling (essential)
  3. Previous experience with face-to-face counselling work (desirable)
  4. Capacity to undertake doctorate level research (assessed during the interview process)
  5. High level of interpersonal skills and self reflective capacities (assessed during the interview process)
  6. Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC)* with the British Psychological Society
  7. Successful applicants should provide evidence of a recent (within the last 6 months) enhanced CRB** check (including POVA, SOVA, and POCA). This is an essential requirement for clinical placements

International Applicants

We are very keen on welcoming trainees from a variety of backgrounds and cultures; for those applicants for whom English is not a first language, we require a minimum IELTS score of 7.0.

This programme is approved by the HPC, accredited by the BPS and validated by The Open University. 

*GBC was previously referred to as GBR (Graduate Basis for Registration). Both will be accepted as proof of appropriate prior training.
