Short Course: Inner Circle Psychotherapeutic Conversations

Contemplative Psychotherapy

Wednesday 14 May 2008 at Regent's College. 6.00pm-8.00pm

The School of Psychotherapy & Counselling Psychology presents an evening workshop entitled:

"Contemplative Psychotherapy -  An introductory to intermediate continuing education course for psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, social workers & psychiatric nurses"

Contemplative psychotherapy encourages and supports practitioners to cultivate "beginner’s mind", to minimise preconceived ideas and to engage directly with their client’s life experiences.

In this workshop effort will be directed toward the development of therapeutic presence by embodying full unwavering attention, mindfulness, and trust in the integrity of uncontrived experience, empathic awareness and compassion. For both client and therapist genuine transformation can be experienced by opening to and actualising one's potential for a more fully awakened and embodied existence.

Goals

  • Introduce participants to the principles, metaskills and clinical objectives of contemplative psychotherapy
  • Describe the process of identification in human development and its contribution toward existential and psychospiritual suffering
  • Identify and experience the basic practice of mindfulness in the psychotherapeutic process
  • Describe and demonstrate the process of “inward searching”
  • Conduct experiential exercises to support didactic learning
  • Demonstrate the application of contemplative clinical methodology through case presentation

Benefit to Participants

Clinical model offers psychotherapists and clients a full range of in-depth, existential-humanistic and psychospiritual possibilities for exploring direct experience.
