SPCP RESEARCH STRATEGY 2011-16

Research at Regent’s College

1.1 Introduction - The Context

The College plans to increase its student population, achieve Taught Degree Awarding Powers, and expand its research and scholarly activity.  One of the key priorities of the College strategic plan is,

To build the strength and relevance of all College programmes by ensuring that they are constructed on a firm base of current knowledge which is supported by the growing programme of applied research carried out by College academic staff.

SPCP has a long established tradition of applied research throughout its postgraduate programmes, especially MPhil/PhD which was the first of its kind in the UK.  The Regent’s College Research Strategy was produced by the Senate Research Committee and approved by the College Senate (see Appendix 1).  The research strategy of SPCP, which is part of the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Science (HASS), has informed and contributed to the research initiatives now being developed by the Faculty and College.

1.2 Regent’s College Research Ethos

Regent’s College considers research an important knowledge base for all its programmes.  This is responsive to the criteria for TDAPs and is manifest in the College’s symbiotic relationship between research, learning and teaching.  The College expects academic staff to maintain a close and professional interest in current developments in research and scholarship, and provides opportunities for them to do so.  Aiming for excellence, multi-disciplinarity and professionalism, Regent’s College has a vision for advanced scholarship, comprising four key aspects:

  • Undertaking applied research;
  • Advancing the knowledge economy and intellectual capital through original scholarly activity;
  • Integrating insights and results of applied research into teaching and training programmes;
  • Advancing facilitation of learning via media such as peer review articles, conference attendance, books, chapters, working papers and professional seminars.
